While Democrats are lining up to challenge Donald Trump in 2020, it looks like one Republican is also looking to ensure the president doesn’t win reelection.
Ohio Governor John Kasich is reportedly looking to team up with Colorado Governor John Hickenlooper (D) for an independent 2020 bid for the presidency.
This (un)dynamic duo want to frame themselves as a centrist alternative to President Trump and the increasingly militant left.
Should this happen, it would be a crazy turn of events. Kasich and Hickenlooper are adored by the Washington establishment. As two moderate (read: milquetoast) governors, they’ll do little to fix our broken immigration system, shrink government debt, or actually lower health care prices. Instead, they’ll suck up to the D.C. press corps, and allow our nation to fall into disarray.
Via Mike Allen at Axios:
But Axios has learned that their duet is part of an alliance that’s gaining momentum toward a possible joint independent bid for president in 2020, likely with Kasich at the top of the ticket:
Why it matters: National Dems so far haven’t capitalized on Trump’s record unpopularity and obsession with his base. But this is a creative coupling that’ll get a ton of airtime, and maybe even traction.
The pushback: Some establishment Dems are apoplectic about the idea of Hickenlooper teaming up with a Republican. One top strategist told me: “No Dem wants Kasich anywhere near our ticket. Sounds like a No Labels fantasy, but moderate Dems would hate it.”
Oh good. Now we’ll get to hear near-endless refrains of “my dad was a mailman” in the run-up to 2020. And Hickenlooper? Try fitting that name on a yard sign.
Trump Derangement Syndrome has reached dizzying heights. Kasich lost to Trump fair and square. And Hickenlooper has no place in a Democratic Party that wants to destroy our monuments and tarnish our country’s history.

This match-up is destined to fail. It’s a nice notion, trying to bring Americans together. But trying to tear down President Trump after you’ve lost to him is just petty.
