Joe Biden Says He Isn’t Sure He Could Have Beat Trump in 2016

In an interview released Tuesday, former Vice President Joe Biden said something that might surprise you: He doesn’t know if he could have beaten Donald Trump in the 2016 election.

“I don’t know,” the 2020 Democrat told the New York Times when the interview was conducted in June. “Everybody says that. But look, I don’t know. You’ve got to be in the game. I thought Hillary would have made a good president.”

Many thought Biden might run in the last presidential election, as vice presidents have been known to do after serving two terms. George H.W. Bush did it in 1988 as Ronald Reagan left office, and Al Gore did the same in 2000, with Bill Clinton vacating the White House.

Biden decided not to run in 2016, citing the death of his son Beau Biden as a primary reason, leaving it to eventual Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton.

We all know how that turned out.

If Biden Wasn’t Sure About 2016, Why Run in 2020?

Biden has gone down in the polls, but he still leads the field of 2020 Democratic field. The next Democratic presidential debate takes place next week.

When Donald Trump appearing on CBS News last July, the president said Barack Obama took Biden “out of the garbage heap” and that running against him in 2020 would be “a dream.”

“I dream about Biden, that’s a dream Look, Joe Biden ran three times, he never got more than 1% and President Obama took him out of the garbage heap and everybody was shocked that he did. I’d love to have it be Biden,” Trump said. “Biden, never by himself, could never do anything.”

Trump very well might get his chance. With most of the 2020 Democrats running to the hard left, Biden has done what he can to portray himself as a moderate and that be what Democrat primary voters decide gives them the best chance of beating Trump.

But the question remains: If Joe Biden isn’t sure he could have beat Donald Trump in 2016, what makes him so sure he can in 2020?
