Editor’s note: The IRS updated their job posting to remove the line about carrying a firearm and using deadly force. An archived version of the web page shows the original text, which reads, “Carry a firearm and be willing to use deadly force, if necessary.”

An Internal Revenue Service (IRS) job posting for special agents received renewed interest for its list of major duties, which include carrying a firearm and a willingness “to use deadly force.”

The interest comes following news that the Democrat ‘Inflation Reduction Act’ will increase the department’s budget by $80 billion and hire tens of thousands of IRS agents.

The bill, expected to pass Congress and reach the President’s desk, increases the IRS budget nearly seven-fold and, as Forbes reports, will use over half of that budget “for enforcement” and to “get bigger, tougher and faster at collecting, and make them pay.”

An Associated Press fact-check claims that Republicans are “distorting” concerns over the IRS budget potentially hiring roughly 87,000 agents because they “will not all be hired at the same time, they will not all be auditors and many will be replacing employees who are expected to quit or retire.”

They add that “experts and officials” have informed them that audits would not increase for low-to-middle income earners.

That said, the budgetary changes match those proposed over a year ago by Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) and President Biden himself, though it is intended that the new workforce be phased in over 10 years.

Additionally, Bloomberg, CNBC, and the Washington Examiner have all reported on the potential hiring of nearly 87,000 employees with CNBC noting opponents’ concerns that “IRS enforcement may affect everyday Americans.”

With that information as a backdrop, opponents of an expansion of the IRS ranks had their interest piqued when stumbling on a job posting for special agents at the tax enforcement arm of the government.

Of particular interest are the “major duties” involved in the job, which include 50-hour work weeks, a willingness and ability to execute search warrants and participate in arrests, as well as the ability to “carry a firearm and be willing to use deadly force.”

The posting, according to the National Review, had been deleted following “renewed scrutiny,” though it has reappeared as of the publication of this post.

It should be noted that clicking through to the current announcements section leads to a job posting for “Criminal Investigator (Special Agent)” which then leads to further information revealing there are 300 vacancies in over 225 locations across the United States.

The opening to closing dates for the positions are February 1, 2022, to December 31, 2022.

Armed Agents?

In addition to increased hiring at the IRS and a cringe-worthy job posting, previous reports have shown that the revenue agency has been purchasing guns and ammunition at an eye-popping rate.

Reports indicate the IRS bought nearly $700,000 in ammunition over a timespan ranging from March 1st to June 1st of this year.

The news prompted Representatives Matt Gaetz (R-FL) and Jeff Duncan (R-SC) to push the “Disarm the IRS Act,” which would prohibit the IRS from buying ammunition.

While the Associated Press is correct in stating not all of the budget and resources will be used on enforcement, more than half is earmarked for that purpose.

And behind the potential hundreds of agents hired there are desk investigators, data analysts, and pencil pushers who will be supporting their efforts.

Enforcement is desired when the federal government desperately needs that revenue as the Biden administration tries to fight off inflation and other major economic issues.

If auditing middle-class workers weren’t the aim, Democrats could have voted for a Republican amendment to ensure just that. But they refused.

Enforcement is the goal. And we’re all likely targets.
