Gun Ownership For Black Americans Skyrocketing As Democrats Push For Gun Control

A new report indicates gun ownership amongst black Americans is skyrocketing, even as Democrats engage in a renewed push for further gun control.

Black Americans are purchasing firearms at record rates due to fear and anxiety, according to The Hill, stemming in large part from accounts of white-on-black violence.

They also note that “gun-ownership amongst Black people spiked both when President Trump lost his reelection campaign and when Ahmaud Arbery, a Black jogger who died after he was inspecting an empty house, was gunned down.”

Robert Cottrol, a law professor at George Washington University, told The Guardian that safety concerns have arisen due to black Americans feeling they have to rely on themselves for their own safety.

“In times of uncertainty people want to be able to have the means to defend themselves,” Cottrol said. “People are worried that they’re not being protected and they’ll have to do it themselves.”

Democrats Push For More Gun Control

Dana Loesch, former spokeswoman for the National Rifle Association (NRA), called news of black Americans owning more guns “fantastic.”

“The only people who have a problem with this are those who ignore (and by ignore, sanction) the discriminatory history of gun control,” she tweeted.

Conservative commentator Candace Owens has previously urged the black community to stand with the National Rifle Association (NRA), suggesting that the pro-Second Amendment group was a civil rights organization.

Martin Luther King, Jr. used peaceful methods to promote racial unity, but he was keenly aware of the dangers involved in promoting such a message amongst his racist enemies.

As such, he was smartly concerned with self-defense for himself and his family.

UCLA Professor of Law Adam Winkler has previously suggested King, as the civil rights movement was intensifying, “kept firearms for self-protection” and “in fact, he even applied for a permit to carry a concealed weapon.”

He later “abandoned self-defense in favor of complete nonviolent resistance” The Hill reported in 2019.

Democrats Want More Control

Last month, Forbes reported that Asian-Americans likewise are “buying guns to protect themselves amid a spike in anti-Asian hate crimes fueled by the coronavirus pandemic.”

“People buying guns to protect themselves from criminal behavior,” one reader responded to the Forbes report. “Remind me, which political party is against that again?”

Senator Chris Murphy (D-CT) reintroduced The Background Check Expansion Act last month, legislation that would expand federal background checks on all gun sales, including private transactions.

S. 42 states that the Act “prohibits a firearm transfer between private parties unless a licensed gun dealer, manufacturer, or importer first takes possession of the firearm to conduct a background check.”

President Biden has refused to rule out using executive orders to enact stringent gun control measures.

“I don’t need to wait another minute, let alone an hour, to take commonsense steps that will save lives in the future and to urge my colleagues in the House and Senate to act,” Biden declared following two deadly shootings in Atlanta, Georgia, and Boulder, Colorado.

A county in Missouri responded to threats of onerous gun control measures by passing a bill that authorizes the arrest of any federal agents who try to infringe upon the Second Amendment rights of its citizens.

The Pew Research Center indicates that blacks represent 24 percent of gun owners, while 36 percent are white and 15 percent are Hispanic.
