Michigan’s Democratic Governor Gretchen Whitmer has declared January 19, the day before Joe Biden’s inauguration, to be a “Day of Racial Healing” in her state.

Whitmer Declares Eve Of Biden Inauguration To Be ‘Day Of Racial Healing’

Whitmer, who is a co-chair of Biden’s inauguration, explained that the day before Biden is sworn in is a day to “promote racial healing and transformation.”

“After the events over the past few weeks, we must take a hard look at the state of rising racial tensions in our country to enact change and begin healing and transformation,” she said, making a point not to specify the events she feels contributed to “rising racial tensions.”

“We each have a role to play in changing this state and country for the better,” Whitmer added. “So, today I challenge you to leave Michigan a better state than where you found it, and make Michigan a more welcoming place for all.”

Whitmer Doubles Down

Whitmer went on to double down and explain this further in an official proclamation.

“Whereas, we understand and recognize that there is a racial divide in our country, and we must all work earnestly to heal the wounds created by racial, ethnic, and religious bias and build an equitable and just society so that all children can thrive,” she said.

“If we all dedicate ourselves to the principles of truth, racial healing, and transformation, we can bring about the necessary changes in thinking, behavior, and systems that will reduce the harmful effects of racial biases and propel this great country forward as a unified force,” the proclamation stated.

This comes after Whitmer announced that she would be traveling to Michigan to Washington D.C. to attend Biden’s inauguration, despite COVID-19.

“The country is ready for a leader who listens to medical experts to lead our country’s COVID-19 response and works on behalf of hardworking Americans,” Whitmer said, according to Fox2.

“I am honored to attend the inauguration of President-elect Joseph R. Biden Jr. and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris and ready to begin working closely with each of them to fight this virus, save lives, and put the country back on track,” she added.
