President Obama will arrive in Texas Wednesday for Democratic fundraisers in Dallas and Austin, but Republican Gov. Rick Perry won’t be there to greet him.
The White House invited Perry to meet Obama on the tarmac when he arrives, the governor’s office said, but Perry has outright refused. Instead, he wants to talk privately about the serious issues facing Texas, especially illegal immigration.
“I appreciate the offer to greet you at Austin-Bergstrom Airport, but a quick handshake on the tarmac will not allow for a thoughtful discussion regarding the humanitarian and national security crises enveloping the Rio Grande Valley in South Texas,” Perry wrote Monday in a letter to the president. “I would instead offer to meet with you at any time during your visit to Texas for a substantive meeting to discuss this critical issue.”

This comes shortly after Perry blasted President Barack Obama for his shameful (and purposeful!) mismanagement of border security on ABC News. At the time, Perry said, that Obama doesn’t “care whether or not the border of the United States is secure.” Perry has been warning the President for years about how serious the issue is, and has been repeatedly ignored.
Perry is not in a mood to shake hands and for good reason.
