Democrat Running in Georgia Special Election Can’t Vote for Himself

Today, voters in Georgia’s 6th Congressional District will head to the polls for a special election to fill the seat vacated by Tom Price, who left Congress to serve as President Donald Trump’s HHS Secretary.

The seat has been held by Republicans since the 1970s, but the election is surprisingly close given the large number of Republicans running for the seat, compared to just one Democrat. The Democrat, Jon Ossoff, has a sizable lead in the Real Clear Politics average of polls, but will likely be forced into a runoff with the Republican who comes in second.

While Ossoff may come out on top in today’s election, a recent interview he did is raising eyebrows.

CNN host Alisyn Camerota revealed that Ossoff doesn’t even live in the 6th District, but actually lives with his girlfriend in another district.

Ossoff refused to directly admit that he wouldn’t even be able to cast a vote for himself today, and instead dodged the question by talking about how he grew up in the area.

Check out the awkward video below:

It appears as though Democrats have placed their hopes on Ossoff winning in Georgia, predicting that a victory could lead to the party taking back Congress in 2018. Democrats must be pretty desperate if their future electoral success hinges on an individual who doesn’t even live in the district he wants to represent.

Given that Republicans have held the seat for decades, it seems like an uphill battle for Democrats to take over the seat in a runoff. Ossoff’s only hope is that voters will split their votes among the plethora of Republicans running and enable the Democrat to reach 50% and avoid a runoff where his chances of victory will decrease significantly.

Do you think Ossoff should even be allowed to run for office given that he can’t even vote in the district? Share your thoughts below!
