Amidst the melee and riotous behavior stemming from the in-custody death of George Floyd after his arrest by Minneapolis police, namely now-former police Officer Derek Chauvin, it has come to light that both Floyd and Chauvin worked together on the same security team at a nightclub a few blocks from where this travesty transpired.

Per a report by KSTP Eyewitness News, Mr. Floyd was recognized by Maya Santamaria, owner of the El Nuevo Rodeo club where Chauvin also worked. Santamaria claimed that Chauvin was a long-tenured component of her security team overseeing order in/around her club venue. Law enforcement officers often work “off-duty” jobs as security for privately-owned establishments, sometimes working in tandem with civilian security personnel.

Santamaria admitted she was unaware if Floyd and Chauvin actually knew each other. Given the club is not necessarily a stadium-sized dwelling, one may wonder if both men had at least some familiarity between one another. According to KSTP, “Santamaria can not say for certain [if] they knew each other because there were often a couple dozen security guards, including off-duty officers.”

Initially, Santamaria did not discern both Floyd and Chauvin were the two main individuals involved in the tragic incident culminating in Floyd’s in-custody death, ultimately sparking riots in Minneapolis, nearby sister city of St. Paul, Los Angeles, New York City and other cities where people took to the streets and embraced violent and destructive behavior.

Santamaria was cued by a friend who put the pieces (faces) together: “My friend sent me [the video] and said this is your guy who used to work for you and I said, ‘It’s not him.’ And then they did the closeup and that’s when I said, ‘Oh my God, that’s him,'” Santamaria said. “I didn’t recognize George as one of our security guys because he looked really different lying there like that.”
