Staff Sergeant Shawn Manning was shot six times by Major Nidal Hasan. The 2009 Fort Hood Victim finally received his Purple Heart but has been denied benefits. This decision is costing Manning his back pay and $800 a month in benefits.

“I think it’s almost unheard of for someone to receive the Purple Heart but not have their injuries deemed combat-related,” Shawn Manning, who was seriously injured in the 2009 attack, told Fox News. “I know that was not what Congress intended to have happen, but it is what currently the Army has determined is going to happen.”

Language in the 2015 National Defense Authorization Act allowed Fort Hood victims to receive Purple Hearts. Previously, Hasan’s shooting rampage had been labeled “workplace violence.” This prohibited the honor from being given despite the fact that Hasan was inspired by foreign Islamic terrorists.
