Former Minneapolis Police Officer Derek Chauvin Released From Jail After Posting Bail

Former Minneapolis Police Officer Derek Chauvin, at the center of the George Floyd case, has been released from jail after posting a $1 million bond.

Chauvin was charged with murder after video emerged of Floyd being detained in handcuffs, lying on the ground, and having a knee pressed against his neck for several minutes.

The charges include second-degree murder, third-degree murder, and manslaughter.

Chauvin had been held at the maximum-security Oak Park Heights prison while awaiting his trial on March 8th.

Attorneys For Derek Chauvin Want Charges In George Floyd Case Dropped

Attorneys for Chauvin have been calling on the charges against their client to be dismissed based on a training manual that allegedly shows the officers followed the standard operating procedure in subduing an erratic suspect.

A Minneapolis police training manual appears to show instructions for the proper technique involved in such a scenario – by placing a knee on the suspect’s upper back area.

It includes an image eerily reminiscent of the scene which sparked hundreds of riots since Floyd’s death.

Other court documents show the medical examiner expressed an opinion that Floyd had a potentially fatal level of fentanyl in his system.

“I am not saying this killed him,” the examiner clarifies, however.

Will Derek Chauvin Being Released Lead to More Riots?

Much like the Breonna Taylor case, the American media have portrayed Chauvin’s guilt and conviction as a slam dunk.

Earlier this month, a grand jury announced that Louisville police officers would not be charged in the death of Breonna Taylor, with one exception of an officer charged with first-degree wanton endangerment.

Protests and riots broke out in Louisville following the news.

There’s little reason to believe something similar won’t happen in Minneapolis with news that Chauvin has been released.

Floyd’s death has been the catalyst for large-scale protests and riots throughout the country, and the resurgence of the Black Lives Matter movement.

It has become a cultural touchstone that has even led to the protest against and removal of statues.

Memorials to Founding Fathers were torn down while monuments to Floyd were erected.

The protests and riots were allowed to spread despite the pandemic as ‘health experts‘ turned a blind eye even as economies were shut down, and churches and businesses were closed.

Chauvin will be required by law to show in court on March 8, 2021, at 9 a.m.
