Florida Gov. DeSantis Declares That All Remaining Covid Restrictions Be Suspended: ‘We Are No Longer In A State Of Emergency’

On Monday, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis signed new legislation that suspends all remaining emergency orders and public health restrictions related to COVID-19.

Gov. DeSantis’ announced at a news conference that this action would take place immediately and without delay with all such restrictions being completely unvalidated by July 1.

The legislation also permanently bans “vaccine passports” and bans local government from enacting some types of COVID restrictions.

Gov. DeSantis: ‘The Fact Is, We Are No Longer In A State Of Emergency’

“The fact is, we are no longer in a state of emergency,” DeSantis said.

DeSantis was careful to note coronavirus still exists and must be dealt with case by case, but cited a significant decline in cases and deaths as reason for his order.

The governor also said that he believes vaccinated people continuing to wear masks undermines public trust in the vaccines.

“I think that’s the evidence-based thing to do,” DeSantis said.

Private businesses are still free to ask customers to wear masks or social distance if they feel the need to do so.

The 

Cases Have Dropped

CNBC reported Monday that, “Florida has reported the third-most Covid-19 cases in the U.S. at more than 2.2 million since the beginning of the pandemic and the fourth-highest death toll at more than 35,000 fatalities, according to data compiled by Johns Hopkins University.”

“Average new cases there, however, have fallen by more than 13% over the last week, dropping to 4,885 as of Sunday, according to the data,” CNBC noted.

CDC Recently Updated Outdoor Mask Guidelines

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced last week that it was safe for vaccinated Americans to not wear  mask outdoors. 

The CDC still recommends that when gathering in crowded areas, both outdoors as well as indoors, fully vaccinated people wear a mask.
