On Sunday, Dr. Anthony Fauci said on CBS News’ Face the Nation that children who have not received the vaccine yet should continue to wear masks if they come into contact with “groups or multiple households.”
The director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases said that parents who have been vaccinated should still be concerned that their children could contract COVID while playing with other children.
Fauci told CBS News host Margaret Brennan, “The children can clearly wind up getting infected.”
“When the children go out into the community, you want them to continue to wear masks when they’re interacting with groups or multiple households,” Fauci said.
When Brennan asked if kids would be able to interact and play this summer, Fauci said that it was “conceivable that will be possible.”
“We now have 3 to 3.5 million vaccinations each day,” Fauci pointed out. “If we keep up with that pace, invariably, that’s going to drive the rate and the level of infections per day to a much, much lower level.”
Fauci also discussed some of the theories of how coronavirus spread.
“It’s entirely conceivable that it was spreading considerably for weeks, if not months, before we recognized it at the end of December, giving it plenty of time to adapt to a human,” Fauci said.
He added, “The other theory that people have is that somehow it did that in a lab and it accidentally escaped.”
Fauci’s comments appeared to be a reaction to former CDC Director Robert Redfield’s claim that COVID came from a laboratory.
“I’m of the point of view that I still think the most likely etiology of this pathology in Wuhan was from a laboratory — escaped. Other people don’t believe that. That’s fine. Science will eventually figure it out,” Redfield claimed last week.
“I mean, those are just varying opinions,” Fauci observed. “I think the most likely one that in nature, in the wild, it adapted itself.”
The World Health Organization is set to release a report about the origins of COVID.
