Phil Burton, a father and devout Baptist, is living a nightmare that most parents could not imagine. His young and attractive daughter, at age 26, is marrying the famously vicious murderer Charles Manson after a 7-YEAR courtship!
Eight months ago, his daughter Afton Burton called him to let him in on the terrible news, using a “matter of fact” tone:
‘Daddy, I’m getting married to Charles Manson!’
For those of you too young to remember Manson’s bizarre crimes, he was the leader of a weird commune in the California desert, and he instructed members to commit murders on his behalf — including actress Sharon Tate, who was pregnant and married to Roman Polanski. Manson believed in what he called “Helter Skelter” — a term he took from the song of the same name by the Beatles. Insane Manson believed Helter Skelter to be an impending apocalyptic race war, which he described in his own version of the lyrics to the Beatles’ song. He also believed his now-infamous murders would help precipitate that war. He was sentenced to death but that became a life-sentence when California temporarily eliminated the death penalty in 1972.
Dark-haired, slender and strikingly pretty, little was known, though much speculated, about the woman who gave her name publicly as ‘Star’ and, age 18, had travelled cross country from her home on the Mississippi River to be close to his Californian jail cell.
Now, for the first time, her father has broken his silence to give his account of his daughter, whose real name is Afton, the strict religious childhood of which she has spoken, her relationship with Manson and her family’s remarkable choice to carry on as ‘normal’ in the face of a situation that is anything but.
In a candid interview he has told of his own conversations with the convict and his suspicion that Manson is driven by Napoleon Syndrome.
He has revealed how he will definitely not go to the wedding and recalled the shocking moment that he and his wife discovered the jailhouse romance their teenage daughter had kept hidden.
Speaking exclusively to MailOnline from the family home in the small town of Bunker Hill, Illinois, Phil, 45, says: ‘We have not, we are not going to and we never will, no matter what she does in her life, disown our daughter. I love my kids more than life itself. I love my daughter, my wife loves my daughter and I know she still loves us.’

Phil believes it is an act of teenage rebellion, and has absolutely no interest in meeting Manson, who is quite dangerous and has been denied parole 12 times. Afton used to work at McDonald’s and now she manages Manson’s website.
The situation is so weird and Phil is praying with his family for his daughter to return home.
