Far-Left Targets Pro-Borders Texas Democrat Henry Cuellar For Primary Challenge

Far-left progressive Jessica Cisneros has launched her second primary challenge against incumbent pro-borders Democrat Rep. Henry Cuellar for Texas’ 28th Congressional District, which sits along the U.S.-Mexico border.

Cisneros, an immigration attorney, first ran against Cuellar in 2020 and lost by just three points.

The race will be one for the whole nation to watch – due to the open border policies of Cisneros, in contrast with the pro-borders views of Cuellar – who has been outspoken even against his own party about the situation at the southern border.

It could be an uphill battle, as progressives have been handed quite a few defeats recently when they have gone up against establishment Democrats. You have got to hand it to them. They are, if nothing else, persistent.

Cuellar Willing To Cross The Aisle – Not The Border

Back in April, as it started to become apparent that the Biden administration had no intention of doing anything about the southern border, Henry Cuellar, along with Rep. John Katko (R-NY), introduced a bill that would require the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to come up with a plan to handle the surge of illegal immigrants coming across the border.

“The Border Surge Response and Resilience Act” would create an “irregular migration surge border response fund,” which could be activated depending on conditions at the border.

Cisneros had this to say about that kind of rare bipartisanship: “I thought this pandemic would wake up our representative to the problems South Texans face daily, but Henry Cuellar proved to us once again that serving his Republican corporate donors matters more than serving our community.”

Perhaps Jessica Cisneros should ask the people of the 28th district if they are more concerned with who Cuellar’s “big Republican donors” are, or their towns being overrun with illegal immigrants, who may or may not have COVID, or be drug dealers or human traffickers.

Radicals Not Appearing To Get The Message

The far-left has not done well in special elections this year. They have been defeated in the Virginia gubernatorial primary, the New York City mayoral primary, and special congressional elections in Louisiana, New Mexico, and most recently Ohio.

Time and time again, American voters reject things like the new green deal, defunding the police, and open borders when they are given a choice. As the situation on the border just gets worse, it could be likely that voters will not want to shake things up but will want to go with someone tested like Cuellar.

It seems like the most traction far-left progressives have gotten is dividing up the Democrat Party.

While Republicans might be divided over anti-Trump vs. pro-Trump factions, Democrats, who have always been a party of coalitions – minorities, LGBT, environmentalists, feminists, etc. – stand a chance of being further divided into establishment and progressive factions.

Right now, the progressives are not a large group, but all of those groups that make up the coalitions will ultimately have to pick a side. And they will pick the side that they think can be most helpful to their cause.

Other Things Democrats Should Worry About

You might think that Democrats would be worried about their microscopic majority in the House and how to keep and/or grow it, or a 50/50 Senate split, or deciding if they want to keep an incumbent in place in a district that runs along the border, but Democrats have other things on their plate as well.

And that thing is Republicans, in a few different ways.

Because of the track record of the Biden administration, and Democrats having control of the House, the Senate, and the White House, and the fact that they always overreach when they are in control, the GOP’s chances in 2022 are looking better all the time.

And Texas border districts may be in their sights.

That may be even easier than previously thought. The Daily Caller reported back in May about a surge of Hispanic women running for office as Republicans. They also reported that the shift from Democrat to Republican is going on in heavily Hispanic counties along the border.

So far, Myra Flores and Monica De La Cruz-Hernandez are both Hispanic Republicans are running for House seats in 2022. Both told The Daily Caller that the Democrat Party had moved way too far to the left, and that they no longer represented their own values or the values of the Hispanic community as a whole.

It is a trend that Republicans must capitalize on to pick up seats in 2022 and 2024, and to grow the party.

Jessica Cisneros had the backing last time of Squad members Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), Ayanna Pressley (D-MA), and Sen. Elizabeth Warren.

But that was so 2020. The times they may be a-changing, and 2022 could be a whole new game.
