President Trump Closes in on White House Counsel Replacement

President Trump is reportedly close to making the most important hire of his entire presidency. It’s not overstating it to say that this pick could determine the course of Trump’s entire tenure in office. He could very well prevent the President from being deposed by a blood-thirsty deep state, eager to sink its jaws into the flesh of a born outsider.

Back in August, we reported that current White House Counsel Don McGahn will leave his current position sometime this fall. (Trump Confirms That White House Counsel Don McGahn Will Step Down This Fall.) It’s widely expected that he will depart following both the confirmation of Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court, and the midterms elections, which are increasingly drawing the attention of the President and entire West Wing staff.

Trump confirmed as much on his favorite medium:

It’s also rumored that McGahn could lend his efforts to Trump’s 2020 re-election bid.

McGahn’s departure comes at a crucial time, and not just because the Democrats seemed poised to make big gains in Congress. The probe into possible collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia is picking up steam. Just this morning, we learned that former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort may reach a plea deal with Robert Mueller, the special counsel heading up the investigation. The next White House counsel will be leading the efforts to protect the President from any legal liability stemming from the probe. This makes it, in a manner of speaking, an existential guardian to the 45th presidency.

In other words, the stakes couldn’t be higher, especially with Democrats salivating over the prospect of impeaching Trump. (RELATED: Chuck Schumer Asked About Impeachment: ‘The Sooner the Better’.)

And it looks like Trump is zeroing in on his man. From the Wall Street Journal:

President Trump is leaning toward Emmet Flood as the next White House counsel, but West Wing officials have urged Mr. Trump not to rush the pick, according to people familiar with the matter.

Mr. Trump told associates over the weekend that he wants Mr. Flood, currently serving as White House special counsel, to succeed Don McGahn, these people said. Mr. McGahn is planning to leave his role as top White House attorney after the Senate acts on the nomination of Judge Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court.

Flood will be a good pick, assuming he is chosen. He has a rich history of fighting off congressional attacks from the White House. He served as W.H. counsel under George W. Bush while he was being investigated for the firing of multiple attorneys. Coincidentally, he also represented President Clinton during the impeachment scandal in the late 1990s.

Should Democrats take back Congress in the fall, and should Mueller write a damning report about possible Russian collusion, we know Congress will act, possibly to impeach. That’s why Trump needs a strong legal defender in his corner. It could make the difference if Trump ends his term after his constitutionally-dictated tenure, or in disgrace.

It’s hard to think of anyone better fit to defend President Trump than Flood, given his experience. Let’s hope he’s up for the job when the time comes.
