The Reuters news agency has just discovered that Yahoo email helped the government look at customers’ emails in real-time by creating a secret program that would search through them for key words in their investigations.
This would be the first time we know that the government was searching through hundreds of millions of emails in real-time.
Yahoo Inc last year secretly built a custom software program to search all of its customers’ incoming emails for specific information provided by U.S. intelligence officials, according to people familiar with the matter.
The company complied with a classified U.S. government directive, scanning hundreds of millions of Yahoo Mail accounts at the behest of the National Security Agency or FBI, said two former employees and a third person apprised of the events.
Some surveillance experts said this represents the first case to surface of a U.S. Internet company agreeing to a spy agency’s demand by searching all arriving messages, as opposed to examining stored messages or scanning a small number of accounts in real time.
Wow. While we might expect that the government needs to keep tabs on emails that might be from people who are threats to our security, there’s so much opportunity for abuse here it’s mind-boggling.
Don’t forget that Yahoo was also the target of “state-sponsored” hacking that compromised hundreds of millions of accounts too!! Here’s more about that:
So if Obama wasn’t reading your emails, Putin definitely was!!
What do you think? Should we just assume all emails have been hacked by someone?! Let us know in the comments section below!!
