‘Real Indian’ Senate Candidate Sues After City Orders Him To Stop Calling Elizabeth Warren ‘Fake Indian’

Sometimes the truth is stranger than fiction, and that’s certainly the case when it comes to Shiva Ayyadurai, a self-described “real Indian” who is suing the city of Cambridge, Mass. after city officials threatened to fine him for displaying signs that accuse Sen. Elizabeth Warren of being a “fake Indian.”

Ayyadurai is a Bombay-born independent candidate for Senate hoping to unseat Warren, and he’s based his entire campaign on attacking Warren’s flimsy claims that she’s part Cherokee. Indeed, since March 17, Ayyadurai’s campaign bus has been parked in front of an office building he owns, sporting signs that boast his campaign slogan: “Only a REAL INDIAN Can Defeat the Fake Indian.” However, Cambridge building inspector Branden Vigneault has reportedly ordered Ayyadurai to remove the signs, claiming they lack the appropriate “approvals and permits.”

But, despite being threatened with fines of $300 per day plus additional legal fees if the signs are not removed, Ayyadurai is standing firm. On Sunday, he filed a lawsuit against the city of Cambridge.

“We will not remove the slogan from our bus,” Ayyadurai told The Washington Times. “We will defend the First Amendment, and we will fight this egregious attack on the First Amendment, at any cost.”

This is not the first time Ayyadurai has taunted Warren about her claims of Cherokee heritage. In July 2017, he actually sent her a DNA testing kit as a birthday gift.

Ayyadurai’s campaign is a long shot, but he certainly gets points for creativity.
