The incident occurred in the evening on Tuesday. Using infrared camera technology, a Border Patrol camera operator saw the smugglers.

A Border Patrol press release noted that one of the suspects dropped the Ecuadoran children, ages 3 and 5.

Then they fled the scene on foot.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection noted that the two smuggler suspects  “abandoned the helpless little girls on the north side of the international boundary line.”

The camera operator immediately notified other agents and showed them the location. Agents found and aided the young sisters.

Officials said both of the girls were alert when they were located.

As a precaution, the twins were transported to a nearby medical center for a physical evaluation and then to a hospital.

Both girls were medically cleared and are currently in temporary custody of the agency, which should be followed by placement through the Department of Health and Human Services.

El Paso Sector Chief Patrol Agent Gloria I. Chavez said in the CBP statement, “I’m appalled by the way these smugglers viciously dropped innocent children from a 14-foot border barrier last night.”

Dropped And Abandoned In The New Mexico Desert

“If not for the vigilance of our Agents using mobile technology, these two tender-aged siblings would have been exposed to the harsh elements of desert environment for hours,” Chavez said.

“We are currently working with our law enforcement partners in Mexico and attempting to identify these ruthless human smugglers so as to hold them accountable to the fullest extent of the law,” Agent Chavez said.

Chavez would write in a follow up tweet, “Smugglers, under cover of night, scaled a 14 ft. border barrier and cruelly dropped 2 young children in the middle of the New Mexico desert.”

She continued, “The girls, ages 3 & 5, were left miles from the nearest residence.”

“Thank you STN Agents for rescuing these children!” Chavez finished.
