The party establishment and the media loved the recently departed Democratic National Convention because it pushed all their buttons.
It was a four night theater of bizarro seemingly written by a mischievous RNC mole, such was it’s aggressive intent to turn off every swing voter in America. It was an L A./Upper West Side echo chamber that was as unintentionally funny as it was out of touch. But even then, some people didn’t think it went left enough.
Maybe they would have preferred a night of rousing songs from the remnants of the Red Army Choir? Or perhaps a Molotov Cocktail home instructional? One of the Bolshie malcontents was Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. What a surprise, given she got all of 60 seconds to hardly bark out her usual lunacy.
“Would I have done things differently? Of course. But as a young progressive Latina I know I was not the target audience for this convention. The target audience for this convention was white moderates who aren’t sure who they’re voting for in November,” she wrote on Instagram. Ummm, white moderates were probably pretty confused by Billy Porter’s inane dance at the end of the first night. Having the whole thing emceed by the likes of Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Kerry Washington, Tracee Ellis Ross, and Eva Longoria didn’t likely do them any favors in Scranton as well. But AOC is blind to that.
More genius from the Bronx bartender, “Do I agree with centering the programming on that audience? Not necessarily. I think we could have done more to rally turnout enthusiasm from our party’s base.” On the platform? “We need massive investment in our country or it will fall apart. This is not a joke. To adopt GOP deficit-hawking now, when millions of lives are at stake, is utterly irresponsible.”
Bernie Sanders chimed in, “They should have had more progressives speaking, giving them speaking spots. If your question is, ‘Should progressives, Alexandria and others, receive more time?’ Yes, I do think so, absolutely.”
But the real fun commentary came from Hollywood 90s has been and self-appointed pundit John Cusack. He tweeted on the final day of the debacle: “Do ya think anyone at dnc entertained the idea – in removing a shitty reality tv star President – Ya might want to avoid presenting a slightly less shitty -but unmistakable Campy kitsch and yes shitty celebrity filled reality tv convention — This might not be a good idea ?”
So to capture the hearts and minds of swing voters in such trendy sophisticated San Francisco wannabe places as Womelsdof, PA and Wausau, Wisconsin, the Democrats doubled down on their “Rich Hollywood celebrities tell you what a racist you are” presentation trope. That combined with proposals that are just this side of Pol Pot, and you have a recipe sure to do well in Malibu, but not in any place where a swing voter ever set foot.
Next week’s Republican National Convention, pray dear God, should not make the same lame mistake from the right.
