Democrat Kyrsten Sinema Gets Backlash From Left For Defending Filibuster

Sinema Defends Filibuster

Sen. Kyrsten Sinema (D-AZ) is feeling the full force of Left wing anger as she continues to defend the Senate filibuster.

On Wednesday, Sinema, along with Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX), spoke to reporters and reiterated her position on changing the Senate rules.

Sinema stated that not doing away with the filibuster, “protects the democracy of our nation rather than allowing our country to ricochet wildly every two to four years.”

And in a rather bold statement, questioning the behavior of Senators, instead of changing the rules, Sinema continued:

“To those who say that we must make a choice between the filibuster and ‘X,’ I say, this is a false choice. The reality is that when you have a system that is not working effectively — and I would think that most would agree that the Senate is not a particularly well-oiled machine, right? The way to fix that is to fix your behavior, not to eliminate the rules or change the rules, but to change the behavior.”

Sinema added that the function of the filibuster is to “create comity and to encourage senators to find bipartisanship and work together.”

She was asked by one reporter if she planned on changing her position on the filibuster, her answer was, “no.”

Democrats Filibuster-Free Daydream

During the 2020 presidential election cycle, Democrats floated the idea of ending the filibuster.

If they kept their majority in the House, took control of the Senate, and Joe Biden became president, the thought of ramming through a radical agenda that would have virtually no opposition was a juicy proposition for Democrats.

However, getting rid of the filibuster was never a done deal.

In 2017, a letter was sent to then Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) by both Republican and Democrat Senators asking them to leave the filibuster in place.

But as 2020 began to look better and better for Democrats, many Senators who were also presidential candidates said they were open to ending the filibuster, including Vice President Kamala Harris.

Prior to Sinema’s election to the Senate, the one person who remained steadfast in his opposition to ending the filibuster is Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV).

At the time, Manchin stated, “I have never supported a repeal of the filibuster and I don’t support one now. I am willing to consider solutions that promote collaboration so the Senate is able to be a productive body again. But repealing the filibuster would result in even more partisanship.”

Where Do Democrats Presently Stand With The Filibuster?

The work schedule for the Senate this summer promises to be a pretty intense one, as Senate Democrats bring forth legislation that is near and dear to them.

The prospect of the GOP filibustering any of those the way they did with the Jan. 6 Commission bill may be too much for them to take.

The filibuster by the GOP was expected, but it is bringing new calls from several Democrat Senators to do away with it.

Adding fuel to the fire, a report from The Hill states that over 57 progressive groups have released a joint statement saying that Democrats can either, “protect the filibuster or deliver on critical and popular policies.”

The statement continued, “The path forward is clear: The filibuster must be eliminated as a weapon that a minority of senators can wield to veto popular democracy-protecting bills.”

Sinema Getting Love From The Left

So what is Kyrsten Sinema getting in return for standing up for what she believes is right and not going along with the groupthink of the Left?

Eli Zupnik, a spokesman for the group, “Save Our Senate” said,

“Sen. Sinema is simply wrong about the history of the filibuster. Its current abuse by Sen. McConnell has turned the Senate into a cesspool of partisanship, gridlock and dysfunction. … The only way Democrats can pass any meaningful legislation to protect voters and our democracy is to eliminate the filibuster. Changing the behavior of the entire Republican caucus — or even just 10 members — is a pipe dream,”

Former Obama aide Dan Pfeiffer was a bit more pointed. He claimed that Sinema’s continued position on the filibuster was, “telling every Democratic activist and grassroots donor that helped get her elected to go screw themselves.”

MSNBC’s Joy Reid just said what most progressives are thinking.

Note to Senator Sinema, this is what going against your own Party looks like.
