City Council In Ilhan Omar’s District Votes to Dump the Pledge of Allegiance

St. Louis Park, located in Rep. Ilhan Omar’s 5th congressional district in Minnesota, was the site of a recent uproar after their city council voted unanimously to do away with the Pledge of Allegiance before meetings.

The move, they claimed, was an effort to serve a more “diverse community.”

“We concluded that in order to create a more welcoming environment to a diverse community we’re going to forgo saying the Pledge of Allegiance before every meeting,” council member Tim Brausen said prior to a 5-0 vote to amend the proceedings.

Anne Mavity, who sponsored the rule change, said the Pledge isn’t necessary.

“Not everyone who does business with the city or has a conversation is a citizen,” Mavity told KARE 11.

Brausen cited another reason for removing the Pledge of Allegiance – alleged intimidation of illegal immigrants.

“Given the current Washington politics that are going on now, there’s a lot of people that are afraid of our government, and we worry about that,” he told the Star Tribune.

“Unfortunately, some of us feel like patriotism has been so politicized that it’s almost used as a weapon against people,” Brausen added.

Outcry

Minnesota Senate Republicans called the City Council vote to remove the Pledge, “shocking.”

Talk show host Joe Pagliarulo took to social media and asked, “Anti-American much?

“St Louis Park should no longer be allowed to claim it’s in the United States of America,” he added.

The controversial move comes just weeks after congresswoman Omar joined the city council to discuss hosting future community events and listening sessions in the area.

They’ll Reconsider

Needless to say, people were dismayed at the council’s actions.

“If you aren’t PROUD to say OUR Pledge of Allegiance then you should NOT be our Government official,” one follower of the Senate Republicans wrote on Twitter. “It is literally pledging allegiance to our United States of America.”

And the people’s voices have been heard.

St. Louis Park Mayor Jake Spano announced that the issue will be taken back up during a meeting on July 8th.

Former First Lady Hillary Clinton last year praised an 11-year-old for kneeling during the Pledge of Allegiance.

“It takes courage to exercise your right to protest injustice, especially when you’re 11!” Clinton tweeted. “Keep up the good work Mariana.”

It takes even more courage to stand up for your nation when it’s constantly under assault by politically incorrect liberals who’d rather eliminate everything we once held dear.
