President Trump to Nominate Christopher Wray to Lead FBI

Over the last several weeks, President Donald J. Trump has interviewed multiple individuals to serve as FBI Director, replacing James Comey, who the President fired for failing to do his job.

After weeks of searching, President Trump has apparently found his man: former Assistant Attorney General Christopher Wray.

The President confirmed the selection of Wray as FBI Director:

NBC News notes that “Wray was nominated by President George W. Bush as assistant attorney general in charge of the criminal division in 2003. He served until 2005 and then returned to private practice, specializing in white-collar crime.”

From Fox News:

During his time at DOJ, Wray became known for overseeing the Enron prosecution task force and playing a major role in the department’s post-9/11 response.

In private practice, Wray also served as New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie’s lawyer during the “bridgegate” saga. Christie has been a close confidante of Trump’s, however, it’s unknown if the two discussed the pick.

“I have the utmost confidence in Chris,” Christie told NorthJersey.com last week. “He’s an outstanding lawyer. He has absolute integrity and honesty, and I think that the president certainly would not be making a mistake if he asked Chris Wray to be FBI director.”

Wray graduated from Yale in 1989 and received his law degree from Yale Law School in 1992, where he served as the Executive Editor of Yale Law Journal. He joined the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Georgia in 1997 and began working at Main Justice in 2001.

Wray received the Edmund J. Randolph Award, the DOJ’s highest award for public service and leadership, when he left the Justice Department in 2005.

Wray’s career has focused almost entirely on law enforcement, making him the perfect pick to lead the FBI. Unlike other potential candidates, Wray has never held elected office, and thus is likely to be seen as a fair and impartial individual, who would not be influenced by partisan politics.

President Trump fired James Comey because he was unable to do his job, and his multiple public appearances made it clear that he was not able to handle his responsibilities. His dismissal was long overdue, and his botched handling of the Hillary Clinton investigation proved that new leadership was in order.

Senate Democrats should look past their obstruction of President Trump and examine Wray’s full credentials when deciding whether or not to confirm him to lead the FBI. Based on his resume, President Trump has made a strong selection, and his decades of legal work should instill confidence in every agent working within the FBI.
