Christopher Sign, the Alabama journalist who uncovered a secret meeting between Bill Clinton and former Attorney General Loretta Lynch on the tarmac of a Phoenix, Arizona airport in 2016, has been found dead of an apparent suicide.

Sign, who was just 45-years-old, was found in his Birmingham home Saturday morning by Hoover police and fire personnel.

AL.com is reporting that police have said “the death is being investigated as a suicide.”

“Our deepest sympathy is shared with Chris’s loving family and close friends,” Sinclair Broadcast Group Vice President and General Manager Eric Land said.

“We have lost a revered colleague whose indelible imprint will serve forever as a hallmark of decency, honesty and journalist integrity,” he continued. “We can only hope to carry on Chris’s legacy.”

Sign Broke The Bill Clinton/Loretta Lynch Tarmac Meeting Story

In June of 2016, Christopher Sign, then a reporter and morning anchor at ABC affiliate KNXV-TV in Phoenix, broke a story about a secret tarmac meeting between former President Bill Clinton and then-Attorney General Loretta Lynch.

Clinton’s wife, Hillary Clinton, former First Lady and 2016 presidential candidate, was under investigation at the time to determine if her use of a private email server while Secretary of State was illegal.

The secret tarmac meeting left many questioning if it were appropriate for the AG for President Barack Obama and Clinton to be talking considering the investigation into his wife.

Sign reported at the time that the meeting was “very interesting” and that the “private meeting on board her plane lasted about a half-hour.”

He noted that Lynch was questioned about the meeting and she insisted “there was no discussion of Benghazi, of State Department emails involving Hillary Clinton, or any current matter having to do with her office.”

“Our conversation was a great deal about his grandchildren,” Lynch claimed at the time.

“Days later,” according to the Daily Mail, “the FBI chose not to bring criminal charges against Hillary, who was in the midst of her presidential campaign.”

Christopher Sign Spoke Of Death Threats

Sign spoke to “Fox & Friends” in February of 2020 to talk about a book he had written about the Bill Clinton meeting with Loretta Lynch titled, Secret on the Tarmac.

A source had witnessed the rendezvous from the moment the former President arrived at the airport, he conveyed.

“We knew something had occurred that was a bit unusual,” recalled Sign. “It was a planned meeting. It was not a coincidence.”

Christopher Sign explained that his source indicated the conversation involved mention of “how things were going at Justice” and that Clinton “talked about her job performance,” not “this golf-grandkids.”

Sign also indicated during his Fox interview that his family had been the subject of death threats after the story broke and that they had even developed “secret code words” so they know what to do in the case of a threat.

“My family received significant death threats shortly after breaking this story,” he said. “Credit cards hacked. You know, my children, we have code words. We have secret code words that they know what to do.”

Jamie Hale, a sports anchor at the network where Sign worked, was shocked by the news of her colleague’s death.

“I can’t believe we have an article with this title. It doesn’t feel real,” she tweeted. “We were in the office together last night cutting up like we always do.”

With the death being investigated as a suicide, there is no indication or report of foul play.
