California Governor Gavin Newsom’s Latest Ban – Gas-Powered Lawnmowers

California Governor Gavin Newsom has signed dozens of laws this month, including one which forbids the sale of new gas-powered lawnmowers in his state.

The new law will take effect in a little over two years.

It is effectively an attempt to phase out any equipment which uses gas-powered, small engines, and would encompass lawnmowers, pressure washers, and backup generators.

Attorney Jim Breslo describes the ban on lawnmowers as California’s attempt “to unilaterally solve the world’s alleged climate change problem.”

Breslo insists that it amounts to nothing more than “a significant tax on lower-income residents” even as they pay among the highest gas and electricity rates in the country, as well as “a tax on small business.”

California Bans Lawnmowers

California Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez (D), one of the authors of the bill, celebrated Gavin Newsom signing it into law as a step to stop “super polluters.”

“Small gas engines are not only bad for our environment and contributing to our climate crisis, they can cause asthma and other health issues for workers who use them,” said Gonzalez. “It’s time we phased out these super polluters.”

Andrew Bray, vice president of the National Association of Landscape Professionals, told the Los Angeles Times that the bill banning gas-powered lawnmowers and leaf blowers is short-sighted and creates problems for those in his line of work.

“A three-person landscaping crew will need to carry 30 to 40 fully charged batteries to power its equipment during a full day’s work,” he said.

“These companies are going to have to completely retrofit their entire workshops to be able to handle this massive change in voltage so they’re going to be charged every day.”

Newsom’s Liberal Spree

Newsom, personifying just how much elections matter – especially the recall variety – has been on quite the liberal whirlwind of late.

When he’s not banning gas-powered lawnmowers in California, he’s forcing retailers to have a gender-neutral toy aisle or mandating free menstrual products in schools.

Earlier this month, Newsom signed a law, that begins in 2024 like the lawnmower ban, dictating stores with 500 or more employees will be required to maintain a gender-neutral area with children’s items and toys.

Those who do not comply will be subject to escalating fines.

Newsom also signed legislation requiring all high school students to take a course in ethnic studies in order to graduate starting in the 2029-30 school year, along with a law banning restaurants from giving away single-use plasticware, condiments, and utensils.

There is little doubt the California governor has been emboldened to create a liberal utopia ever since his recall victory.
