Border Arrests Plunge, Deportation Arrests Surge in 2017

If you build it, they won’t come.

Following the election of President Donald Trump, foot traffic across the border declined. I’ll admit, I was surprised. After all, wouldn’t illegals be rushing to get in before the border wall goes up? The only reasonable explanation for the fall in traffic was that Trump threatening to resume immigration enforcement was enough to scare them off.

That isn’t to say that the problem of illegal immigration is over – far from it. MSNBC accidentally proved just how necessary the wall is when reporting on the border prototypes that are currently being constructed back in October…. only to literally broadcast a handful of illegals crossing the border illegally.  And of course, we still have 10-15 million illegal immigrants in the U.S. to deport.

It’s been over a year since Trump was elected – and have the trends continued? It’s looking like it.

According to the Associated Press, “the federal government, in the most complete statistical snapshot of immigration enforcement under President Donald Trump, says Border Patrol arrests plunged to a 45-year low while arrests by deportation officers soared. The Border Patrol made 310,531 arrests during the fiscal year that ended Sept. 30, a decline of 25 percent from 415,816 a year earlier and the lowest level since 1971. Despite the significant decline, arrests increased every month since May — largely families and unaccompanied children.”

More: “Immigration and Customs Enforcement, whose officers pick up people for deportation away from the border, made 143,470 arrests, an increase of 25 percent from 114,434 a year earlier. After Trump took office, ICE arrests surged 40 percent from the same period a year earlier.”

While the physical border hasn’t yet been constructed, the Washington Post has been bemoaning Trump’s success with his “invisible wall.” What is the invisible wall? Just the term the Post chose for “simply enforcing immigration laws already on the books.”

Mexico ain’t paying for it – but there’s nothing for them to pay for, yet.

Meanwhile in Congress, Ted Cruz has renewed the push for Kate’s Law, which would impose a mandatory minimum penalty on deported illegals who re-enter the country.

While we don’t have a wall yet, Trump truly is doing everything in his power to combat illegal immigration until we do.
