Bill Clinton’s book tour with James Patterson has resulted in an absolute avalanche of hot takes that have been entertaining, to say the least.

There were claims that he couldn’t be elected today because he’s not mean enough, assertions that if Trump were a Democrat he’d be impeached, suggestions that the media was soft on Obama because of his skin color, and of course, the Monica Lewinsky meltdown.

Now, we can add one more gem of a statement to the collection.

Clinton, during an interview with Stephen Colbert, placed the blame for massive election losses for the Democrat Party on the shoulders of one Barack Obama. He even agreed to the notion that he didn’t do enough to help his wife out.

“President Obama I think, I think he did a really good job, but I think he could have done even more,” Clinton said. “If all of us who voted in 2008 and 2012 for him had also voted in 2010 and 2014.”

Colbert chimed in, “and 2016,” alluding to Hillary Clinton’s historic loss.

“Yeah,” Clinton responded.

Clinton is partially correct. It wasn’t just that Obama didn’t do anything to help out his fellow Democrats, it’s that he did too much.

The former President would frequently remind voters that while he wasn’t on the ballot in 2010, 2014, and 2016, his policies were. It was a deterrent that Americans took to heart when they entered the booth and pulled the curtain behind them.

In 2014, Obama trumpeted that “my policies are on the ballot, every single one of them.”

The Democrats then went out and lost the Senate to Republicans.

The 2016 presidential election was widely seen as a referendum on a perceived third term for Obama, as Hillary would continue his policies. That too was lost in epic fashion.

“The notion somehow that well, I’m not as inspired because Barack and Michelle are not on the ballot this time, maybe we’ve got to take it easy –- my legacy is on the ballot!” Obama pleaded.

And we all know how the American people responded to that idea.

Obama’s party was decimated during his tenure, suffering historic losses at every conceivable level of government. Not, as Clinton asserts, because he didn’t help out enough. But because his failures as President were on the ballot.
