President Biden was on the receiving end of a fair bit of criticism after claiming the election of Giorgia Meloni in Italy is evidence that “democracy is at stake” and Democrats must be elected to save it.

Meloni, a right-wing politician, became the first woman elected prime minister in Italy. While that would normally be something the left would celebrate, the fact that she is a conservative means they must demonize her.

“Well, folks, you know — and I mean this sincerely; you’re going to think this is a little out of whack, what I’m going to talk about — but, you know, democracy is at stake,” Biden told those in attendance during a Democratic Governors Association political fundraiser.

“Literally, there’s a — there’s a case being made around the world, not just here, because democracy and autocracy.”

One such case, according to Biden, was Italy’s elections.

“You just saw what’s happened in Italy in that election. You’re seeing what’s happening around the world,” the President asserted. “And the reason I bother to say that is we can’t be sanguine about what’s happening here, either. I don’t want to exaggerate it, but I don’t want to understate it.

“And it’s the reason why I’m so concerned about and so interested in and so committed to seeing that the governors — Democratic governors — are elected,” said Biden.

Biden Says Election of Giorgia Meloni Means Only Democrats Can Save Democracy

Critics swiftly offered backlash to Biden’s comments that the election of his political adversaries such as soon-to-be Italian PM Giorgia Meloni was evidence that “democracy is at stake.”

“The only way to protect democracy is by voting the way we tell you to!” columnist Eddie Zipperer tweeted.

 

National Review columnist Pradheep J. Shanker pointed out that President Biden is casting doubt on a democratic election and simultaneously ranting about saving democracy.

 

PJ Media columnist Stacey Lennox added to the criticism of Biden’s comment on Giorgia Meloni.

“‘Threat to democracy’ means anyone who disagrees with the internationalist Left,” she wrote. “If you want a sovereign nation not governed by unelected international elites, somehow that is anti-democratic.”

Biden, Who Raids His Political Opponent’s Homes, Says ‘Democracy is at Stake’

Perhaps the most effective takedown of Biden’s remarks claiming the free and fair election of Giorgia Meloni means “democracy is at stake” comes from Human Events senior editor Jack Posobiec.

“Last time I checked, Giorgia Meloni still hasn’t taken office and hasn’t done anything,” Posobiec fired back in response.

“Has she ever forced biomedical edicts on anyone? No, she has not,” he continued. “Has she ever called for the vast, massive censorship of the internet? No, she has not, particularly when it comes to her opposition.”

“Has she raided opposition candidates and locked up opposition protestors, no she has not.”

President Biden has done all of these things.

 

“President Biden does that all the time, by the way,” said Posobiec. “He’s constantly raiding the opposition.”

“They’re getting raided so much – Biden’s raiding so many members of the opposition that we’re all starting to get used to it,” he added. “It’s starting to enter into some normalcy phase.”
