Ben Carson Tells Tucker Carlson He Would Never Work for a Racist: ‘I Would Be Out of There in Two Seconds’

The Secretary of Housing and Urban Development discussed charges against Trump on Fox News

Speaking on Wednesday evening to Fox News host Tucker Carlson on “Tucker Carlson Tonight,” Ben Carson, the secretary of Housing and Urban Development, said of President Donald Trump, “I’ve never seen any evidence of that [racism] whatsoever. Our conversations have frequently centered around disadvantaged people in our country and what we can do to elevate them.”

“And it seems to me like a racist wouldn’t spend so much time on second-chance legislation,” added Carson. “He wouldn’t spend so much time with opportunity zones, trying to take people who have made a lot of money and put those unrealized capital gains into areas that have traditionally been neglected so that people can rise. He wouldn’t spend so much time working on affordable housing, recognizing what the crisis was. The list goes on and on.”

“These are not things that people who are racist would do,” Carson also said. “So, you know, people need to look at what the results are — and not spend all of their time parsing every word and trying to make it fit their narrative.”

His remarks come as many Democrats, many mainstream media members and others have rushed to level charges of racism against the president ever since last weekend, including four progressive congresswomen who call themselves the “squad” — Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.), Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-Mich.), Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.), and Rep. Ayanna Pressley (D-Mass.). Trump has sparred with these House Democrats and others after the four decided a tweet he sent out over the weekend about them was “racist.”

“If they don’t love [our country], tell them to leave it,” Trump further said of the newly minted lawmakers (all elected during the 2018 midterms).

The lawmakers have made many comments that are extremely critical of this country — the Somali-born Omar, for example, said earlier this year of the 9/11 terror attacks during a speech, “Some people did something.”

The same lawmaker refuses to apologize for anti-Semitic remarks she’s made — suggesting any interpretation of her comments in that regard is the fault of others.

The House of Representatives also voted late on Tuesday voted to condemn Trump’s comments — even after House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) violated a rule over decorum in that chamber.

“We have an amazing country. People are trying to come here from all over the world. There’s no other place like it. There is no place that has a history like our country.”

On Wednesday night, Carlson asked Secretary Carson bluntly, “Would you work for a racist?”

Carson responded, “No, I wouldn’t. I would be out of there it in two seconds.”

“And I certainly have had an opportunity to see what racism is, you know, growing up in Detroit and the ’60s,” he added. He said that “this is a magnificent country, you know, where someone like me could grow up in poverty, become a brain surgeon [and then] a Cabinet member [for the president of the United States]. You know, why would anybody knock a place like that? And if it was such a bad place, people wouldn’t be forming caravans to come here.”

Carson added that people have “a very, very clear choice … Let them continue to fight and define themselves, and let the American people decide.”

He noted that most Americans “have common sense.” And “they’re not going to throw away what we want for Venezuela … We have an amazing country. People are trying to come here from all over the world. There’s no other place like it. There is no place that has a history like our country.”

“Have we made mistakes?” added Carson. “Absolutely. Do we learn from them? Absolutely. Is that a reason to throw out the baby with the bath water? Absolutely not.”

His final parting shot was this: “People who can only focus on the negative aspects of our country and not see the positive aspects — you have to wonder about what their motives are.”
