Most would assume that bars pulling NFL games from their television lineup would hurt their business. But in Beavercreek, Ohio, Bill DeFries, owner of Beef O’Brady’s and a retired Marine, didn’t care.
Two weeks ago, DeFries met with his leadership team, and explained just how important it is to defend America’s flag and our country’s values. But his partners were skeptical and assumed the business would be harmed financially:
But DeFries explained, “We are a family restaurant, and we have been for 13 years. And our customers are from the community. They come in here to relax and enjoy a meal and be entertained, in particular by the NFL on Sundays. But we also serve a lot of local military families and veterans, many of whom share my view on the NFL players’ actions during the national anthem.”
But rather than take a financial hit for his patriotic stand, something amazing happened. The boycott generated so much attention that the bar boosted its sales between 200 and 300%! People have driven for hours to support DeFries’s business, and Americans are standing by this proud veteran.
While Americans love football, it’s clear that we love our flag and freedom more. A local newspaper from Ohio reported:
“Every day our sales have been up between 200 and 300 percent,” DeFries said Sunday. “People we have never seen before are driving hours to support us and the employees. We have received heart-warming and supportive phone calls, emails and direct messages from people all over the United States thanking us.”
DeFries, a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps, first told this news outlet of his decision. But since then, he and his stance have made national news, appearing on Fox News, the Sporting News, the Washington Times and elsewhere.
“I feel good, but it’s not about me,” DeFries added. “It has less to do with me now than it has to do with we. It turns out the enormous amount of pride and reverence that we have for the national anthem and everything that it means to us as a free people … is shared by the vast majority of Americans, and I’m seeing it firsthand.”

CBS News conducted a survey that showed a majority of Americans disapproving of football players protesting our flag during the National Anthem. Ratings have continued to plummet and the NFL is losing out on millions of dollars in advertising revenue thanks to these shameful anti-American displays.
