As Midterms Approach, Democrats Break Fundraising Records

Bloomberg reported on Monday that in August, the Democratic National Committee raised $9.9 million which put their total fundraising for 2021 to $110 million.

According to someone familiar with DNC fundraising, both numbers represent record amounts.

As the midterm elections approach in 2022, the Democrats hold razor thin margins in both houses of Congress.

Bloomberg reported, “More than half of the haul in August, traditionally a slow month for raising money, came from small-dollar donors, who gave $5.2 million. So far this year, grassroots contributors have combined to give $58.4 million, also a record amount for an off-year.”

“The strong grassroots support has helped the DNC amass a $67.8 million war chest, money that will be used in the midterm battle with Republicans for control of the closely divided Congress,” the news outlet noted.

Bloomberg observed that that the “Republican National Committee reported having $79 million in the bank at the end of July.”

Not surprisingly, Democrats touted their fundraising success on social media.

The party tweeted, “August was an incredible fundraising month for the DNC—the stats speak for themselves: Raised $12.2 million, Had our best off-year August ever, 98% of donors in 2021 have given gifts of $200 or less!”

“Grassroots donors are powering our party,” the tweet added.

GOP Opposition To COVID Spending Bill Strong Driver

What is it that is driving more Democrat donors to empty their pockets for their party?

Chair of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, Rep. Sean Patrick Maloney, said his party’s fundraising has gone up significantly due to Republicans opposition to the COVID-19 relief bill, the January 6 rioters, and new GOP-backed voting and abortion laws in various states.

Maloney said in a statement as reported by The Hill, “Our grassroots support is proof positive the American people believe in protecting a woman’s right to make choices about her own body, defending our democracy from attacks by insurrectionists, and want to protect the health and economic progress Democrats delivered.”

Both parties are due to file monthly reports with the Federal Election Commission Monday.
