AOC Reportedly Thinking About Running Against Schumer

In a new interview on Monday, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) refused to rule out running against the current Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) in 2022.

AOC Considering Run Against Schumer

Ocasio-Cortez was asked by Punchbowl News if she was considering a run against Schumer in two years.

“I’m a no b——t kind of person. I’m not playing coy or anything like that,” she replied. “I’m still very much in a place where I’m trying to decide what is the most effective thing I can do to help our Congress, our [political] process, and our country actually address the issues of climate change, health care, wage inequality, etc.”

When asked if she thinks Schumer is doing a good job, Ocasio-Cortez dodged that question as well.

“It’s a hard thing to say too. We’ve had to deal with a fascist president and Mitch McConnell,” she responded.

AOC Discusses Her Political Future

Rumors have been swirling for quite some time that the 31 year-old self-described Democratic Socialist was considering a run against Schumer for his Senate seat. In an interview with Vanity Fair last month, Ocasio-Cortez admitted that she was unsure about what her political future will look like.

“I don’t know if I’m really going to be staying in the House forever, or if I do stay in the House, what that would look like,” she said. “I don’t see myself really staying where I’m at for the rest of my life. I don’t want to aspire to a quote-unquote higher position just for the sake of that title or just for the sake of having a different or higher position.”

Even President Donald Trump has weighed in on what he thinks would happen if Ocasio-Cortez took on Schumer.

“I think she will kick his ass,” he said last year.

Schumer Weighs In

As for Schumer, he has tried to convey confidence that he will keep his seat, according to the New York Post. When asked about a potential challenge from Ocasio-Cortez back in April, Schumer said, “Look, throughout my career, I have done my job. I’m totally focused on COVID, we are the epicenter. And I have found, throughout my career, you do your job well, everything else works out okay.”
