Our economy has made some great structural changes over the past four decades, most of which are attributable to advances in technology. Every year it seems more jobs become susceptible to automation – and I personally have my fingers crossed that computer algorithms won’t be able to write as well as I do and take my own job.
Using data from the Bureau of Labor, some researchers at Business Insider were able to uncover the nine jobs most quickly evaporating. Is yours on the list? Find out below:
It should be noted that while extremely painful in the short run, such “creative destruction” is necessary for an economy, and a civilization, to advance.
Back in the 1700s, over nine in ten people were employed in agriculture. Today, that number is a mere two-percent. Does that mean we have 88 percent unemployment? No – of course not, as those who initially lost their jobs found work elsewhere. And it’s a good thing they did – for if we didn’t allow the sector to become more efficient (and thus shed jobs), we’d all be working on farms today.
