A new report shows that over 2,600 votes have reportedly been discovered in Georgia during that state’s recount process that weren’t previously counted in the overall presidential race ballot tally.
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports the ballots were uncovered in Floyd County.
The batch of ballots benefit President Trump – there were 1,643 new votes for the President, and 865 for Biden.
Biden’s lead in Georgia had only been 14,000 votes before the recount began.
Gabriel Sterling is Georgia’s voting system manager and told the newspaper the mistake was chalked up to human error, not the voting equipment.
Sterling claimed the votes had been mistakenly overlooked and had not been uploaded to the scanning machine’s memory card.
Sterling did call it “an amazing blunder” and added, “It’s not an equipment issue. It’s a person not executing their job properly.”
“This is the kind of situation that requires a change at the top of their management side,” he said.
The issue is severe enough that Sterling called on Floyd County’s elections director to resign.
Director of the elections division for the office of Georgia’s Secretary of State, Chris Harvey, confirmed that the newly discovered votes will be added to the state’s overall tally.
Floyd County Republican Party Chairman Luke Floyd told the AJC that the mistake was “very concerning,” but it “doesn’t appear to be a widespread issue.”
The AJC reported that this would add about 800 net votes for President Trump to Georgia’s overall presidential election vote count.
Which begs the question – could there be other discrepancies? In Georgia, or the states where Team Trump has issued legal challenges?
According to the unofficial results, Joe Biden was projected to win Georgia last week by a lead of more than 14,000 votes.
The AJC reports that the Floyd County discrepancy was the “most significant issue” to arise this far in the recount.
Mistakes are bound to be made in any election. But with the stakes so high in 2020, how many mistakes occurred, and need to be discovered?
This is a good example of why a recount was necessary in the first place.
How that math adds up is anyone’s guess, but we already know the final number will be different from the original tally.
