President Trump To Sign Russian Sanctions Bill Into Law

After months of negotiation between the twin chambers of Congress and the White House, a deal has been reached on a Russian sanctions bill.

White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders confirmed that President Trump will support the bill once it emerges from Congress.

President Trump was wary of imposing new sanctions on Russia because doing so ties his hands as he attempts to negotiate with Russian President Vladimir Putin over Middle East strategy and the invasion of Ukraine.

From the Washington Post:

The White House has indicated that President Donald Trump would sign a sweeping Russia sanctions measure that requires him to get Congress’ permission before lifting or easing the economic penalties against Moscow.

The House was scheduled to consider the sanctions package as early as Tuesday, and the bill could be sent to Trump before Congress breaks for the August recess. The legislation is aimed at punishing Moscow for meddling in the presidential election and its military aggression in Ukraine and Syria.

Trump’s main objection to the bill was that it forced the president to consult with Congress before lifting any sanctions. Ever the deal marker, Trump wanted to have leverage to drop the sanctions in case he could work out an agreement with Putin over a variety of issues.

Huckabee Sanders didn’t say what the compromise was, but Democrats ended up being satisfied with the result. Having Democrats on board is an astounding feat, given how stubborn they are to support any of the Trump agenda.

Let’s hope this deal is a good one.
