New numbers being released show that illegal immigration dropped sharply in January, the first month President Trump took office.
The flow of illegals crossing the southern border dropped 27% from December to January, according to the Customs and Border Protection agency.
The drop seems to signify the Trump Effect: the realization that immigration laws would be enforced as Trump took office.
Still, there’s a ways to go, as the January numbers remain historically high.
Via the Washington Times:
Illegal immigration across the southwest border plummeted in January, compared to December, as the flow of both illegal immigrant families and children traveling alone dried up, according to numbers released by Customs and Border Protection on Monday.
The numbers are still high compared to past years — indeed, it’s the worst January in records dating back to 2012.
But total apprehensions of migrants trying to sneak across the border fell 27 percent on a month-to-month basis, to 31,575. And the number of inadmissible migrants who showed up at the southwest’s ports of entry fell 28 percent, to 10,899.
Apprehensions are deemed an indicator of the overall flow: The more people caught, the more are believed to be getting through.
Another word of caution here – illegal immigration tends to be low during the winter months and picks up in the spring.
Still, law enforcement at the Texas border have already claimed there has been a noticeable drop in the number of border crossings since late January, signaling recognition that newly inaugurated President Trump’s positiion on illegal immigration is already having an effect.
In January, the President announced a series of executive orders providing the Department of Homeland Security “with additional resources, tools and personnel to carry out the critical work of securing our borders, enforcing our immigration laws, and ensuring that individuals who pose a threat to national security or public safety cannot enter or remain in our country.”
It appears to be working already!

Yep… January’s numbers are lower because nobody likes going north during the winter.
Jobs that Americans don’t want to do? I’m sorry, but those spoiled brats who want safe spaces could learn more from the school of hard knocks, rather than the male bovine excrement courses taught in our universities. I’ve done time in/on the fields, job sites, floors and roads. I learned a valuable lesson of earning an honest buck, and how not to squander it.
The sooner the wall goes up the better.
Alderman, Americans will start doing those jobs when illegals are prevented from entering and able bodied People on welfare rolls lose their benefits. Stop the handouts and they will have to work to support themselves. What a concept!
What a BS article. Do you people even read the trash you print? You’re trying to double dip on patting trump on the back for nothing. Biggest drop in 4 years but still historically high? BS. Of course crossings pick up in the spring- that’s when crops need to be harvested doofus. They’re not coming for food stamps- they’re coming for jobs- you know- the jobs americans won’t do.
Why do children try to cross the border alone? DACA. After a few years, they claim “My parents brought me here when I was a child; I didn’t have any say in the matter.”
Jobs Americans won’t do. Any why won’t Americans do them? Because we have a glut of unskilled labor, which decreases the price below welfare subsidies. Our schools have become experts at producing unskilled labor. Why do we need to import it?
Come on give adlerman a break. You do not want him to lose his welfare and food stamps do you????
