The malicious software behind the onslaught appeared to exploit a vulnerability in Microsoft Windows that was supposedly identified by the National Security Agency for its own intelligence-gathering purposes and was later leaked to the internet.

Britain’s national health service fell victim, its hospitals forced to close wards and emergency rooms and turn away patients. Russia appeared to be the hardest hit, according to security experts, with the country’s Interior Ministry confirming it was struck.

An intrepid blogger and cyber expert were able to stop the attacks!

“I saw it wasn’t registered and thought, ‘I think I’ll have that’,” he is reported as saying. The purchase cost him $10.69. Immediately, the domain name was registering thousands of connections every second.

What Is Ransomware?

Ransomware uses a virus to infiltrate a system. Files and other data are locked until payment is received. Last year a similar attack infiltrated systems used by American hospitals, causing thousands to be paid out in ransom.
