President Barack Obama isn’t good at much… But he’s an expert at blaming George W. Bush for everything.
In fact, Obama spent the entire campaign cycle of the 2008 election promising the world that he will end the war in Iraq and stop fighting against the Taliban and al Qaeda in Afghanistan.
But his second term is ending. Iraq is in chaos and Americans are destined to stay there for decades while the Islamic State (ISIS) grows stronger.
And now, Obama just announced a crushing defeat of his supposedly anti-war agenda: 5,500 American soldiers will remain in Afghanistan after his second term is over. Wow!
President Obama said Thursday he will keep 5,500 U.S. troops in Afghanistan into 2017, ending his ambitions to bring home most American forces from that war-torn country before he leaves office.
The president said his decision came after an extensive months-long review that included regular discussions with Afghanistan’s leaders, his national security team and U.S. commanders in the field. The move reflected a painful, if predictable, reality on the ground in Afghanistan, where the Taliban has made gains over the last year as Afghan troops have taken over the vast majority of the fighting.
“Afghan forces are still not as strong as they need to be,” Obama said Thursday morning from the White House, explaining his decision. “Meanwhile, the Taliban has made gains particularly in rural areas and can still launch deadly attacks in cities, including Kabul.”
Retired Lt. Col. Rick Francona, a CNN military analyst and former intelligence officer, told his network that Obama’s decision is simply “kicking this can down the road” for the next president. Obama will be out of office by the time troops are set to be drawn down again.
“This is this administration pushing this off to the next administration because the next time they have to make this decision, it will be a different president in the White House,” Francona added.
Afghanistan is simply too unstable for America to leave, thanks to Obama’s failed leadership on the world stage.
This is a crushing defeat for Obama, who has spent his entire career hating the military and bashing our troops. What a pathetic Campaigner-in-Chief we have.
