The people from the great state of Alabama took a huge proactive step in the last election to protect themselves from creeping Sharia. As more followers of Islam move to America, the threat has become real, but Alabama just said, “ENOUGH!”
Amendment One, an amendment to the state constitution that prohibits foreign law being used to decide cases in Alabama courts, has passed easily and will be added to the Alabama Constitution.
Eric Johnston, the Birmingham attorney who drafted the amendment, felt vindicated after it was described as an attack on Muslims.
“I put in about three years of work on it,” Johnston said, after AP and Politico declared that the amendment passed. The amendment passed by a wide margin of about 72 percent to 28 percent with 96 percent of precincts counted.
Johnston drafted the amendment for State Sen. Gerald Allen, R-Tuscaloosa, who sponsored it. Johnston said it had a wider application than banning Sharia law, the Muslim code of law and morality. “We were just trying to do something legal, not political,” Johnston said.
A legislative committee now will decide where the amendment fits in the Constitution and how it will be numbered, under which article, in the published code, Johnston said.
Johnston said it does not undermine the religious rights of Muslims or anyone else, but does prevent lawyers from arguing from Sharia law in an Alabama custody case, for example.
“Your constitutional rights are not affected by it,” Johnston said. “We’ve got a religious freedom amendment in Alabama. All it says is pay attention to the religious freedom amendment. Women’s rights are compromised by Sharia rights if a lawyer in a custody case says, ‘Islam requires you to do this.’ It’s a help to judges. It doesn’t create any new laws.”
Certain groups have called this amendment racist. But the problem is, so much of Islam’s teachings are incompatible with civilized society. This amendment draws a clear line in the sand that 14th century thinking cannot be protected by law.

I think anyone found trying to conduct or enforce any foreign laws should be deported from our country . To try and establish a foreign law is a form of treason in my opinion . This title is extremely misleading, not surprised. I live in Alabama. This all began because we were getting new foreign companies settling in Alabama every year. They’re mainly auto manufacturing and subsidiaries. In order to maintain US law in regards to job discrimination, sexual harrassment, right-to-work, etc., Alabama made it clear to the companies that they have to abide by US law and state laws, on other matters. Hence, this amendment.

I have studied some of the history of Islam and this is what I found: Since the start of Islam it’s founder (660 ad) killed thousands just because they would not convert to Islam. Mohammed celebrated while 800 people were being beheaded. It has always been a religion of violence. Those today (ISIS 2014) are only following the example Mohammed gave them kill those who do not believe. It’s historically established fact the Islam is a religion of violence. From 660 ad until now 1354 years that Muslims have been murdering people (about 2 million). You have to go back to the 1300’s to find anything. During the Crusades the Islamic were slaughtering Jews and Christian that is why they had to go and defend the Jews and Christians. So if defending someone is violent then I guess we should all let the Islamic kill us and not defend ourselves. Self-defense or defense of others is the right thing to do. Yes some of the Crusades got off base from the original intent but killing someone because they refuse to convert has always been the Islamic way. (There are 109 verses in the Koran that tell them to kill those who are not Muslim.) Mohammed when he could not defeat a foe would make a peace deal build up his troops a lot stronger then return and defeat his foe. ISIS has beheaded, burned alive, buried alive, crucified, sold women as sex slaves, raped women, as of to date ISIS has killed a estimated 200,000 people. Sharia Law is a cruel and disgraceful type of system. There is the US Constitution and States Rights, the threat of Sharia is real to each state in the Union because of States Rights. This is different and separate from the Constitution. This was an issue in the Civil War, did the states have the right to enforce slavery laws separate from the Constitution? The 13th amendment outlawed slavery in the United States forever. But before that the issue was States Rights. Now if an amendment to the Constitution outlawed Sharia Law, it would be unlawful, until then we have the threat of this heinous practice being lawful in some states.

I beg to differ, Muslims are trying to pass Sharia Law in the US as they did try in Irving Texas. The mayor of Irving Texas told them and those that were acting as judges more or less without a Lawyers degree. Did in fact try to operate within the confines of our judicial system for the purpose of family law and or disputes among themselves. As a Texan I 100% back Alabama on this decision to not only protect the interest of Americans that have roots into this land, the women of this nation but also those that are of different religions and especially for the women and children that are of muslim faith to choose freely as well.
The title of this page is very inaccurate. Muslims did not try to pass Sharia law… at all… Anymore than Christians like me tried to pass the ten commandments as law, which is also incompatible with our countries laws, like people have commented about Sharia law… Not even all Muslims practice Sharia law just like not all Catholics observe Ash Wednesday. I’d vote against Sharia law being state or federal law just as i would vote against the ten commandments as state or federal law. But no one is suggesting that so it is unnecessary.

If someone wants to swear on what will they swear on? As citizen of the US you have the right to swear on anything. Even on your dead grandma’s grave if you choose to. I think some people misunderstand that Sharia Law could never be implemented as it conflicts with the U.S. Constitution, therefore passing this was a waste of time. Since when does “foreign law” let alone religious law ever apply in the U.S.?…Never. It would still apply in the case of Biblical law.

We all as American citizens have so many things in common and not so common, but the one that stands out above the rest is that we as a nation have respected the law, obeyed the law, and have all embraced the law. I didn’t read on the other cases, but one I did in particular. The case of the woman being raped was reversed by federal courts. Sharia law has no place in the judicial system and goes against the constitution as well. There will be no other law implemented within the US. Plain and simple. As for those that do honor killings, there is no place but prison and or death penalty for those that do so. Judges acting on Sharia Law should lose their seats immediately for not upholding the constitution.

Muslims in America will argue that the Sharia law they practice here isn’t a “foreign” law since it’s practiced here. I don’t think this Alabama legislation addresses that. They’ll exploit every crack or opening.

The chief Islamic Imam in Saudi Arabia and others have even said in interviews and elsewhere that the US Constitution is Sharia compliant and vice versa. We all know Sharia is not constitutionally compliant, but their aim is to try to “inflict” Sharia law on us. Where have you been? That’s established fact. Looking at the replies to this post, I think there seems to be a general misunderstanding about what this law is. First of all, this article does not say that Muslims were trying to impose Shari’a law in Alabama, although the title and header does imply such a thing. The law is saying that foreign law cannot be used to aid in the decision of legal matters in the state of Alabama, which legally actually makes a lot of sense. The issue that Muslims are having with this is that the law according to the Shari’a and the law according to the United States are very different, especially in cases of family and inheritance. Therefore, the Muslims are not saying that they want all Americans to submit to their religion’s form of law, but rather that they want the religious freedom to be able to have their standards decide their family cases. I see a case for both sides, but there is a fine line in this country between church and state, and religious law cannot be the law of the land. Unfortunately, this is an issue in which there is probably no compromise and no easy answer for everyone.

Alabama was wise to get the law on the books preventing Sharia law, but not all states have done it. From what I hear, Sharia law has already taken effect in Dearborn, Michigan and perhaps other places. We can voice our opinions all we want against Sharia law and the Muslim or Islamic religions, but what are we really prepared to do if they try to implement these laws in other parts of the country? Are we ready to take up arms to prevent it? Who is going to step up to the plate in a unified manner and say NO?? Is this just a bunch of rhetoric or are there people really willing to stop it in its tracks?? Who is ready to take action??

With Sharia Law there is no room for leniency and so forth. A woman has no rights of any kind, if she is raped she can be put to death. That is just to name one. This is funny. I live in Alabama and my first thought when I voted yes for this was that it was designed to prevent the UN from bypassing our 2nd amendment. I didn’t even think about it pertaining to Sharia, but I’m glad it does! Should work against the UN also.

I live in Alabama and I think some of the 28% are residents who are muslims already living here (which is not many). The other part of the percentage is more than likely some of the Alabama residents who misread or did not understand the amendment’s wording or even just marked something without even reading. I am certainly glad this was added to our voting agenda this November and I am so proud of the Great State of Alabama.

I think Obama took all quotas off of Muslim immigration, even in the town I am from in Louisiana has about 20% Muslims out of 55k population + the 35% increase in illegal Hispanics over the past 3 years. You know in years past, the percentage of foreigners allowed in to the U.S. was about 5 to 10% of the total population of the U.S.; now there is no limit and they do not even have to register. The 28% I would break down this way 40% of the 28% were black civil rights activists, 30% were white liberals, 20% were illegals who were allowed to vote both Hispanic and Muslim, and !0% of the 28% were simply ignorant, uninformed voters who always vote NO on any amendment or proposition no matter what it says or how it is worded.

The Sharia law as I understand it would indeed set our rights back 400 years. The fight against this law was not racist, it was based on civil rights for every one. Thank you to the voters of Alabama for knowing the effect those laws would have on everyone. Anyone who supports Sharia Law really needs to study it and see if this is really how they want to live. The very idea that a girl can be killed simply because she wants to be free to meet, fall in love, and marry a man of HER choosing not because of some honor code is bone chilling.

As a Muslim born and raised in America and Canada, how can I possibly go “back” to the Middle East? If my wife and I have elected to follow a certain religion and want our family’s legal issues to be decided according to the guidelines of the religion we voluntarily follow, don’t we have the right to do so?
My suggestion is for you to move to a country that follows that law. You see in America we value our heads. They help us get through the day. We think with it, walk with it, talk with it, swim with it, and actually realize that without it we can’t exist. Sharia law will lead to the barbaric standards from the old age that America has long grown away from to reliving the horror and nightmare that is the muslim culture. Therefore, if you are comfortable in raising your family in such a horrific way, move to the muslim region of the world. Don’t ask a culture that isn’t barbaric to become barbaric. When any one moves to a country they are obligated to adopt that countries laws and in a case where a peoples laws such as sharia so directly conflict with the laws of the land you have chosen to move to, it is your obligation to either follow the laws of the land you have moved to or move to a country that follows Sharia laws. You can not dismiss the violence and abuse in Sharia laws by simply saying things like….oh yes Adultery is punishable by stoning but this is rare….it doesn’t matter if it’s rare, it’s illegal in American, period. The Quran itself can be used as an argument against this as the quran flatly states that the word of a woman is only half that of a man, so if it’s correct that it takes 4 witnesses to condemn a woman of adultery this is easily done, it would take 8 women to find the woman innocent wherein it only take 4 men to find her guilty even if shes not. And then the quaran can be used again to further this by pointing to the fact that quran teaches that it is allowed to lie to further ones cause. So it doesn’t matter if things like stoning, cutting a persons hand off or the rape of a woman is rare, it is not allowed at all under any circumstance in America.
Your religions laws are not greater than America’s Constitution, Bill of rights and Declaration of Independence and laws of the land. Your Sharia laws, quran and Islam have no legal standing here because they are steeped in violence and persecution of other religions. any one like myself who has actually taken the time to study the quran and other Muslim writings is well aware of the deep rooted belief of Muslims that only their religion is to be tolerated and all others obliterated, your own Muhammad preaches this over and over and again it is in direct conflict with our laws and constitution.
Most Americans believe in our constitution and the amendments put forth by our forefathers. We have fought in many wars with young men who gave their lives so others could stay free so whatever beliefs you have you may support them but in no way will we allow any change you may want others to live by in whatever country you came from.
