French Presidential Candidate Refuses To Wear Head Scarf When Meeting Muslim Cleric

Marine Le Pen, French Presidential candidate for the far-right political party Front National, had a meeting with Lebanon’s Grand Mufti, a top Muslim cleric.

Upon arriving, an aide for the cleric demanded she wears a headscarf before entering his office.

Big mistake.

“You can pass on my respects to the grand mufti,” Le Pen said, “but I will not cover myself up.”

She then walked out.

Take a look at the exchange:

Via the Washington Post:

Le Pen, who is on a three-day visit to Lebanon this week and has met senior officials, was to meet with the country’s grand mufti, Sheikh Abdel-Latif Derian.

Shortly after she arrived at his office, one of his aides handed her a white headscarf to put on. Following a discussion with his aides that lasted few minutes, she refused and returned to her car.

It would seem the cleric’s office was trying to embarrass Le Pen, as she had told them before the meeting that she would not wear a scarf.

“They didn’t cancel the meeting (after informing them), so I thought they would accept the fact that I wouldn’t wear one,” she said. “They tried to impose it upon me.”

The mufti’s office issued a statement calling Le Pen’s actions “inappropriate behavior.”

Le Pen’s refusal to bow to the Muslim cleric earned her well-deserved praise on social media.

She even earned a comparison to our own President:
