A Huffington Post political reporter called on Congress to enact more extensive gun control measures Monday as the death toll continues rising in Las Vegas.

A shooting Sunday night in Nevada is considered the deadliest mass shooting in U.S. history.

Jennifer Bendery, a senior HuffPo political reporter briefly recounted the carnage inflicted on concertgoers Sunday night and then quickly pivoted toward a call for legislative progress on gun control.

Stephen Paddock, 64, of Mesquite, Nev., opened fire from the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay Hotel and Casino around 10 p.m. on a crowd of thousands of concert goers gathered on the street below, killing at least 50 and wounding more than 200. Police found Paddock dead when they arrived on scene.

Authorities have not yet completed a background check on Paddock, who is identified as a white man, but did find several unspecified weapons in his hotel room, Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department Sheriff Joseph Lombardo said at a press conference at 1:30 a.m. Monday morning.

Police have located the suspect’s wife, Marilou Danley, a 62-year-old Asian female, believed to have been traveling with Paddock prior to the attack. They do not believe she was involved in the incident.

Videos taken at the scene show mass hysteria as gun shots rang out and the band fled the stage.

Authorities have not yet determined Paddock’s motivation or any ideological commitments that may have prompted the attack.
