Jonathan Demme, Director of Silence of the Lambs Dies at Age 73

“Silence of the Lambs” was one of the most iconic and terrifying movies of the last several decades, captivating audiences around the world. The film was a box office success, grossing over $200 million and winning 5 Academy Awards.

Tragically, the director of that iconic movie, Jonathan Demme, died on Wednesday. He was 73 years old.

According to Variety, Demme passed away as a result of “cancer complications.” Many of his fans took to Twitter to mourn Demme’s passing:

For “Silence of the Lambs,” Demme earmed both Academy Awards for Best Picture and Director. The film also won the award for Best Actor, Actress, and Best Adapted screenplay, making it only the 3rd movie ever to win all 5 awards.

In addition, Demme directed the critically aclaimed movie “Philadelphia” which tackled the AIDS epidemic in America, as well as the comedy “Rachel Getting Married.” Demme is survived by three children from his two marriages.
