College Park, Maryland Will Allow Illegal Immigrants to Vote

Well, they did it.

The city of College Park, Maryland, has approved a measure that will allow illegal immigrants to vote in local elections. By a 4-3 vote, and after roughly four hours of contentious debate, non-citizens were granted a right that should only be held by residents of the city who are Americans or legal immigrants.

Fox 5 reports that College Park “joins six other towns in allowing legal permanent residents and undocumented immigrants to vote in municipal elections.”

According to WJLA in Washington, one council member proposed an amendment that would only allow non-citizens to vote if they could prove they were in the country legally, via a green card for example. The amendment was shot down when the mayor, Patrick Wojahn, cast a tie-breaking vote against it.

College Park has been debating the issue of allowing non-citizens to vote for months. They were supposed to hold a vote in August but it was postponed after alleged threats against a council member.

The vote was conducted after council member Fazlul Kabir – the same member who attempted to add the amendment – tried to have a non-binding voter referendum, which was also squashed by Wojahn’s tie-breaking vote.

“Although you come up here and you say that there are hundreds of citizens and residents of College Park that are for this charter, I can tell you that there are thousands against it,” said Beth Debrosky, a resident who opposed the measure. “Voting is a right of the citizens. It’s plain and clear. It’s constitutional. It’s also written at the state level and it also belongs at the local level.”

At a previous meeting on the matter, Laurence Provost explained that “voting is a right, but it is also a privilege and there are standards for voting.”

He added, “Citizenship is special.”

Not to Democrats. Citizenship is just an artificial barrier to inflating their voter rolls.
