The statue was dedicated to Columbus 08 June 1912. Every year since 1934, people in the United States have celebrated the day in October 1492 when Christopher Columbus "discovered" America. "The celebration has taken on a life of its own to the point that 36 years ago, Columbus Day became a legal public holiday," Salvatore Zizza, president of the National Italian-American Foundation, said. In fourteen hundred ninety-two
Columbus sailed the ocean blue.
He had three ships and left from Spain;
He sailed through sunshine, wind and rain.

We’ve all heard the old poem taught in school about explorer Christopher Columbus.

But as the national holiday that remembers his contribution to our nation arrives today, Monday, October 9th, far-left, politically-correct zealots have renewed their push to rewrite him out of our history.

This year alone, 21 cities across the United States have opted to celebrate the holiday as ‘Indigenous People’s Day,‘ which does little more than to provide them with a temporary, warm, fuzzy feeling in their tummies.

Cities from Burbank, California, to Bangor, Maine, have jumped aboard the PC crazy train.

Jim Stinson of Lifezette explains that liberal rage is a result of “the manner in which Columbus helped settled the Americas.”

“By discovering the Americas for the Spanish — and starting the race to settle the Americas — Columbus kicked off a series of conflicts and wars between the Native Americans and the Europeans,” Stinson explains.

Those conflicts are what stir discontent on the left.

The Knights of Columbus couldn’t disagree more.

“He was a man ahead of his time, who brought two worlds together and began the process that led to the founding of this country,” says CEO of the Knights of Columbus, Carl Anderson. “It is a testament to Americans’ commitment to a fair reading of history that the explorer’s popularity has endured despite the unfair and hateful attacks by British propagandists, the Ku Klux Klan, and revisionist academics.”

Still, with violent leftists on a kick to rewrite history and destroy statues nationwide, the NYPD is being forced to provide protection to a Columbus statue located in Columbus Circle around the clock.

“The statue has been there for years and years [since 1892] without any issues,” complained one police source. “Now because everybody’s complaining about Columbus, and they attacked him with paint, we have to put cops on there to make sure nobody does it anymore.”

New York City mayor Bill de Blasio has put together a commission to determine whether or not the statue of Columbus should be removed altogether.

Forty-one Italian-American groups responded by boycotting the mayor’s Columbus Day reception as a result.

Former President Ronald Reagan, a man 1492 times the stature of de Blasio, once declared Columbus “one of the true heroes of our Nation’s history.”

“He is justly admired as a brilliant navigator, a fearless man of action, a visionary who opened the eyes of an older world to an entirely new one,” Reagan said in a 1981 proclamation. “Above all, he personifies a view of the world that many see as quintessentially American: not merely optimistic, but scornful of the very notion of despair.”

Quintessentially American. No wonder liberals want to see him removed from the nation’s consciousness.
