Contrary to liberal rhetoric, the Republican Party has a tremendous record of fighting for civil rights, particularly those of African-Americans.
From the end of slavery to the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s, it was predominantly Republicans supporting the black community (despite the fact that blacks have been overwhelmingly voting for Democrats since the 1930s). Over 80% of congressional Republicans voted for the 1964 Civil Rights Act, while only around 60% of Democrats did the same.
So how can Democrats claim with a straight face that it’s the Republican Party with a race problem? Simple – they lie and claim that the two parties “switched sides” over the issue of civil rights. That’s certainly a bizarre claim given that every KKK member to ever hold office was a Democrat (and they never switched Republican in the 1960s), but there is some truth to the talking point. The South was once heavily Democrat, and is now heavily Republican.
