The liberal state of California has officially decided to honor former president Barack Obama by renaming a portion of a highway after him, according to the LA Times.
The California legislature just approved a resolution that renames a portion of 134 Freeway to President Barack H. Obama Highway. The location is between the 2 Freeway and 210 Freeway.
Generally, it will cost about $7,000 for the new freeway signs, but the actual price tag hasn’t been disclosed.
The State Senate approved the resolution in May with a 35-1 vote, but after the Assembly voted in favor of the bill in August, the new measure passed 38-0.
Obama does have a connection with California. Besides the critical impact the liberal voters of California played in the 2008 and 2012 elections, Obama also attended Occidental College in Los Angeles in the 1970s before transferring to Columbia University. The freeway would have been part of Obama’s commute to classes.
State Senator Anthony Portantino, who introduced the resolution and represents the portion of the state where the Freeway is, used the opportunity to slam President Trump’s changes to Obama’s unconstitutional DACA program for children of illegal aliens. How tasteless:
“It is also quite appropriate and symbolic that the California Legislature would pass this resolution for a president filled with compassion on the same day we witness another president turn his back on 800,000 children,” he said.
Portantino also said the naming of the freeway honors the 44th president’s connection to Southern California.
“It is so important that California highlights the dignity of President Obama,” he said. “His direct connection to Southern California in general and to the 134 Freeway specifically makes this the appropriate and exciting place to recognize his tremendous accomplishments and the presidential manner in which he led our country.”
