President Trump Nominates Alexander Acosta to Lead Labor Department

On Wednesday, President Donald J. Trump’s nominee to head the Department of Labor, Andy Puzder, was forced to withdraw his nomination after Republican Senators refused to support him.

Despite having a strong business record and wanting to reduce government regulation harming American employers and employees, multiple Republicans caved to Democrat pressure.

Four Republican Senators, Johnny Isakson, Tim Scott, Susan Collins, and Lisa Murkowski doomed Puzder’s nomination, as revelations about his personal life came to light. In addition, reports suggested that an additional 8 Republicans were unwilling to pledge their support for Trump’s nominee, forcing Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell to advise the White House to pull the nomination.

Now, President Trump has nominated Alexander Acosta, dean of Florida International University School of Law, to replace Puzder as his Department of Labor nominee.

From NBC News:

Acosta served as assistant attorney general for the Civil Rights Division under President George W. Bush, selected by the president in August 2003. Acosta was a member of the National Labor Relations Board and also served as Principal Deputy Assistant Attorney General in the Civil Rights Division. Most recently, he was the dean of Florida International University College of Law.

If confirmed, Acosta would be the first Hispanic in Trump’s cabinet.

In addition, CNN notes that Acosta “clerked for Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito when he sat on the Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit and practiced law at Kirkland & Ellis in Washington.”

Puzder had a strong business record, so hopefully Trump’s new nominee will follow through on the Trump administration’s pledge to reduce government regulation and eliminate much of the red tape that hinders businesses and employees in this country.
